Medical Transport helicopter carrying our friend to emergency surgery

Our story began in 2008

with a phone call from an urgent care center telling us our close friend TJ was being transported via helicopter to a larger hospital north of us.

A land surveyor by trade, he had been working alone in a remote field when he suffered excruciating pain and drove himself to the nearest clinic.

As I drove to each Emergency Room north of here, I was told he had been rerouted to the next hospital. I was increasingly anxious with each stop. Something wasn't right.

45 miles later, I finally caught up with him. He had been admitted and was in emergency surgery.

Emergency heart surgery

A deadly heart attack

TJ had suffered a deadly heart attack, known as the 'widow maker'. They had flown him into the cardiac hospital where I had worked for many years as a critical care RN in the open heart unit. Ironically, he had surveyed the heliport pad his helicopter landed on.

30 minutes later I was at his bedside in a critical care unit.

Against all odds, he had survived.

NuTrak was born

TJ knew he was having a heart attack the minute the crushing chest pain took his breath away.

What he didn't know was he only had a 12% chance of surviving it.

He also didn't know a better quality diet could lower his future mortality rate by 40%.

But diet guidelines like 'eat less fat' or 'cut down on salt' just weren't enough with stakes this high.

It was this day, March 12, 2008 that NuTrak was born.
